What are features of oral cancer that may arouse suspicious during an IO exam?
- red/white/speckled lesions
- ulcerated areas
- high risk sites
- symptom free
- unknown duration
- risk factory history
What do you call a white patch that you’re not able to wipe off?
leukoplakia
What does homogenous mean?
the whole lesion looks the same e.g. all the same colour
What does heterogenous or non-homogenous mean?
the lesion look different in different areas e.g. mixed white and red patches, areas of ulceration, areas of erosion etc
What does ‘mapping’ mean?
taking incisional biopsies at multiple sites of a lesion/from multiple lesions
What is dysplasia?
a potential malignant disorder
What are dysplasia’s graded into?
mild, moderate, or severe
What is a field change?
when the whole area has gone under potential or frankly malignant change
Why is it worrying if a lesion is indurated?
sign that underlying tissue has been infiltrated by cancerous cells
(indurated - feels firm and rubbery)
