M+O 11 - articulators Flashcards
What are the 5 (/6) types of articulators?
- (the real thing)
- handheld study casts
- simple hinge articulator
- plane line articulator
- average value articulator
- semi-adjustable articulator - Denar Mark II
What are the range of mandibular movements with tooth contact governed by?
- TMJ
- tooth guidance
What are the 2 types of tooth guidance?
- protrusive - retrusive movements: incisal guidance and cuspal guidance
- lateral: canine guidance or group function
When can/can’t handheld study casts be used?
- fine for simple study models..
- if sufficient reference teeth
- limited use if insufficient reference teeth
What is the only function of single hinge articulators?
allows casts to be located to the recorded position
What are the issues with simple hinge articulators?
- non-anatomical arbitrary hinge axis
- hinge movements that are not representative of condylar hinge movements
What do plane line articulators allow?
allows casts to be located to the recorded position
What use can plane line articulators have?
some use for simple restoration of teeth that are not involved in guidance of mandibular movements, simple removable prostheses
What are the issues with plane line articulators?
- articulator hinge axis nearer condylar hinge axis but still an arbitrary position
- hinge movements therefore not representative of condylar hinge movements
- no excursive movements possible
What do average value articulators allow?
allows casts to be located in the recorded position
What can average value articulators have use for?
some use for simple restorations of teeth that are not involved in guidance of mandibular movements or removable prostheses
What is the hinge of an average value articulator like?
- articulator hinge axis nearer condylar hinge axis but (without the use of a face bow) still an arbitrary position
- movements therefore not representative of condylar hinge movements
- average condylar guidance angles
- excursive movements possible within the limits of the above
Where is the articulator hinge axis located on a semi-adjustable articulator - Denar Mark II?
articulator hinge axis located to (terminal) condylar hinge axis using a face bow recording (using EAM as a reference)
What can be programmed into a semi-adjustable articulator?
condylar guidance angles/shifts with the aid of excursive occlusal recordings
What can a semi-adjustable articulator have use for?
use for restoration of teeth that are involved in guidance, advanced restorative work e.g. bridges, implants and occlusal reorganisation
