Obstructive Airway Diseases Flashcards
3 common obstructive airway diseases
chronic bronchitis
emphysema
asthma
Bronchitis
inflammation of bronchial tubes
emphysema
over inflation of alveoli
```
causes SOB
reduced/impaired gas exchange
~~~
COPD is what two diseases?
emphysema
chronic bronchitis
FVC
final total amount of air expired
Spirometry predicts the FVC on
age
sex
height
(similar to peak expiratory flow rate)
Normal PEFR
400-600 litres per min
Obstructive lung disease FEV1/FVC/Ratio
FEV1 = 1.8l
FVC = 3.4l
FEV1/FVC= 0.53
Clinical definition of bronchitis
cough productive of sputum most days in at least 3 consecutive months for 2 or more consecutive years
Morphological changes in chronic bronchitis
large airways
Mucous gland hyperplasia
goblet cell hyperplasia
inflammation and fibrosis (minor component)
Morphological changes in chronic bronchitis
small airways
Goblet cells appear
inflammation and fibrosis (in long standing disease)
hyperplasia
enlargement of tissue or organ
increase in reproduction of cells etc
Clinical definition of emphysema
increase beyond the normal in the size of airspaces distal to the terminal bronchiole arising either from dilatation or from destruction of their wall and without obvious fibrosis
Bulla
emphysematous space greater than 1cm
Bleb
a bulla just under the pleura
