Cat Estrus Cycle
- Polyestrous
- Seasonal (Spring to Fall)
- Induced ovulators - need mating to stop cycle
- No vulva discharge
Dog Estrus Cycle
- Monestrous
- Average 6 month cycle
- Vulva discharge
Gestation Length
63 Days (9 weeks)
Gestation Nutrition
- First 5 weeks - normal, no change
- Week 6-8 - increase good by 1 meal
- Last week - increase to reproductive/puppy formula to increase calories
- No supplements needed
Whelping
Isolate mom 3 weeks prior to birth until 3 weeks after
* prevents herpesviral infection
Parturition
Stage 1
Uterine contractions but not actively pushing
* temp can drop below 99 within 24 hours of delivery

Delivery of babies
Parturition Stage 3
Passing of placenta
* can occur right after each baby or at the end
Parturition
ER Status
- Active pushing without babies for 30 minutes
- Weaker contractions without baby for over 2 hours
- More than 3-4 hours between babies
- Stuck baby
- Active bleeding
Post-Whelping Care
Vulva discharge
* may be green, dark-red, brown or bloody
* no smell
Mastitis
Firm, warm, or painful mammary glands
Metritis
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
Eclampsia
Low calcium (monitor post-whelping)
* can occur due to supplements given during gestation
* or if too many babies produced
Post-Whelping Nutrition
Lactation
* free feed
* 2-4 times normal amount
* switch back 6-8 weeks post-whelping
Neonatal Developement
First Week
Spend majority of time sleeping and eating
* feed every 2-4 hours
