O140 Multi-Domain Operations Flashcards
Definition of multi-domain operations
Method by which Army forces penetrate and disintegrate enemy anti-access and area denial systems and exploit the resultant freedom of maneuver to achieve strategic objectives (win) and force a return to competition on favorable terms. The central idea includes rapid and continuous integration of all domains of warfare to deter and prevail as the U.S. competes short of armed conflict
MDO assumptions
- adversaries will challenge U.S. interests short of full-on war
- adversaries conduct armed conflict via regional campaigns with limited warning to seize strategic objectives
- technologically advanced weapons (precision guided, air defense, cyberspace, etc.) are growing
- neither the U.S. nor adversaries will employ nuclear weapons
Tenets of MDOs: Calibrated Force Posture
1) forward presence forces (forward-deployed and rotational units and capability sets)
2) expeditionary forces (long-range fires, space, cyberspace capabilities)
3) National Level Capabilities (intelligence, cyberspace, space-based, and some kinetic strike capabilities normally controlled above the theater level)
4) Authorities (ie. Electronic attack, offensive cyberspace and space measures, and lethal strikes
Tenets of MDOs: Multi-Domain Formations
5) Conduct independent maneuver (possessing the capacity, capability, and empowered initiative to operate under the constraints of the OE)
6) Employ cross domain fires (builds resilience to overcome temporary functional separation imposed by enemy anti-access and area denial systems)
7) maximize human potential (through selection, training, and education)
Role of the brigade in Multi-Domain Operations
Brigades converge organic ISR, maneuver, and fires capabilities with limited amounts of available aviation, maneuver support, electronic warfare, joint fires, and offensive space capabilities
-all brigades are multi-domain capable
Cyberspace definition
A global domain within the information environment consisting of the interdependent networks of information technology infrastructures and resident data, including the internet, telecommunications networks, computer systems, and embedded processors and controllers
Defensive cyberspace operations (DCO)
Passive and active cyberspace operations intended to preserve the ability to utilize friendly cyberspace capabilities and protect data, networks, net-centric capabilities, and other designated systems
Offensive cyberspace operations (OCO)
Cyberspace ops intended to project power by the application of force in or through cyberspace
What is electronic warfare (EW)
Military action involving the use of electromagnetic and directed energy to control the electromagnetic spectrum or to attack the enemy. Includes Electronic Attack, Electronic Protection, and Electronic Warfare Support
3 components of electronic warfare
Electronic Attack
Electronic Protection
Electronic Warfare Support

What is Information Operations (IO)?
The integrated employment, during military operations, of information-related capabilities in concert with other lines of operation to influence, disrupt, corrupt, or usurp the decision-making of adversaries and potential adversaries while protecting our own
IO is accomplished through Information Related Capabilities (IRC):
- Military deception (MILDEC)
- Military Information Support Ops (MISO)
- Soldier and Leader Engagement (SLE)
- Civil Affairs OPS
- Combat Camera
- Operations Security (OPSEC)
- Public Affairs
What is Military Deception?
Actions executed to deliberately mislead adversary military, paramilitary, or violent…
