O & I: Gluteal Region Muscles Flashcards
Origin: Gluteus Maximus
Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line; dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion: Gluteus Maximus
most fibers end in iliotibial tract; some fibers insert on gluteal tuberosity
Innervation: Gluteus Maximus
inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Action: Gluteus Maximus
extends thigh (especially from flexed postion) and assits in its lateral rotation; steadies thigh and assits in rising from sitting position
Origin: Gluteus Medius
external surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Insertion: Gluteus Medius
lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
Innervation: Gluteus Medius
Superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1)
Action: Gluteus Medius
Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advance oppposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
Origin: Gluteus Minimus
external surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines
Insertion: Gluteus Minimus
Anterior surface of greater trochanter of femor
Innervation: Gluteus Minimus
Superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1)
Action: Gluteus Minimus
Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advance oppposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
Origin: Tensor Fasciae Latae
anterior superior iliac spine; anterior part of iliac crest
Insertion: Tensor Fasciae Latae
iliotibial tract, which attaches to lateral condyle of tibia
Innervation: Tensor Fasciae Latae
Superior gluteal nerve (L5, S1)
Action: Tensor Fasciae Latae
Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and advance oppposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
Origin: Piriformis
anterior surface of sacrum; sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion: Piriformis
superior border of greater trochanter of femur
Innervation: Piriformis
n. to piriformis (S1 and S2)
Action: Piriformis
laterally rotate extend thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetablulum
< 90 = external rotation
> 90 = Internal rotation
Origin: Obturator Internus
pelvic surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones
Insertion: Obturator Internus
medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of femur
Innervation: Obturator Internus
nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1)
Action: Obturator Internus
laterally rotate extend thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetablulum
Origin: Superior Gemelli
Ischial spine
Insertion: Superior Gemelli
medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of femur
Innervation: Superior Gemelli
nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1)
Action: Superior Gemelli
laterally rotate extend thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetablulum
Origin: Inferior Gemelli
Ischial tuberosity
Insertion: Inferior Gemelli
medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa) of femur
Innervation: Inferior Gemelli
nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
Action: Inferior Gemelli
laterally rotate extend thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetablulum
Origin: Quadratus Femoris
lateral border of ishial tuberosity
Insertion: Quadratus Femoris
quadrate tubercle on intertrochanteric crest of femur and area inferior to it
Innervation: Quadratus Femoris
nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
Action: Quadratus Femoris
Laterally rotates thigh; steadies femoral head in acetabulum
Origin: Iliotibial tract
Iliac crest
Insertion: Iliotibial tract
lateral condyle of tibia
