Nutrition -
substances within the food that your body needs to grow, repair itself, and supply with energy
Nutrients -
measured in calories
Energy -
condition in which bones become fragile and break easily
Osteoporosis -
the way your body signals that it needed fuel
Hunger -
can increase your desire for food through your senses
Appetite -
proteins and fats are nutrients that provide energy; 45-65% of your daily calories come from these
Carbohydrates -
nutrients that provide other bodily functions
Vitamins and minerals and waters -
sugars; main source of fuel for your body
Simple carbohydrates -
starches; Ex: bread/pasta
Complex carbohydrates -
moves waste through your digestive system; Ex: fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
Fiber -
made up of chemicals called amino acids; there are 20 amino acids; Ex: meat, eggs, + dairy products
Proteins -
can be saturated or unsaturated
Fats -
can lower your risk of heart disease
Unsaturated fats -
if consumed too much you can risk the chance of a heart disease ex: meat + dairy
Saturated fats -
perform many functions in the body; they consist of 2 types: water soluble (C + B) and fat soluble (A, D, E, + K)
Vitamins -
vitamin not stored in the body; (C + B)
Water soluble -
vitamin stored in your body; (A, D, E, + K)
Fat soluble -
your body doesn’t produce and you must get them from food; most important of these is calcium
Minerals -
eating foods rich in this mineral reduces the risk of osteoporosis
Calcium -
essential for most body functions; needs to be drank when hot to prevent dehydration
Water -
5 ways your body uses energy:
Energy source
Sustain growth
To heal, build, + repair tissue
To transport oxygen to cells
To regulate body functions
