Digestion -
the chewing, mashing, or breaking down of food
Mechanical process -
involves secretions produced by digestive organs
Chemical process -
the tissue covering the throat which prevents food from entering the respiratory system
Epiglottis -
hollow sack like organ enclosed in the wall of muscles which are flexible and allow the stomach to expand when you eat
Stomach -
organ located in the abdomen which converts the food we eat into fuel for body cells
Pancreas -
central for digesting food and getting rid of toxic substances; produces bile which is yellow-green fluid that’s important in the breakdown and absorption of fats
Liver -
stores and releases bile in the digestive system to break down fats
Gallbladder -
20-23 feet long absorbs nutrition from food
Small intestine -
5-6 feet long absorbs water, vitamins, and salts and helps to eliminate waste
Large intestine -
feeling of discomfort in the upper abdomen that is accompanied by gas/nausea
Indigestion -
burning sensation in the center of the chest that may rise up to the throat
Heartburn -
feeling of discomfort that sometimes precedes vomiting
Nausea -

The digestive system consists of 4 things:
- Mouth
- Esophagus
- Stomach
- Intestines
