Nueropathies Flashcards
what are neuropathies
affects PNS
location: axonal or myelin
fiber: motor, sensory, autonomic
pattern: symm, asymm, distal, proximal
compare GBS and CMT in terms of how you get it
GBS: acquired
CMT: inherited
discuss GBS
progressive symm weakness of limbs c hypo or areflexia
can be s/c sensory prob
unknown cause
probable causes of GBS
campylobacter jejuni - GIT
cytomegalovirus - respi
esptein-barr
autoimmune
swine flue vaccine
initial clincial manifestations of GBS
starts days-wks p respi or GIT infection
symm limb weakness: proximal –> distal
paresthesia: stocking and glove pattern
DTR: normal then absent
sensory loss and ataxia*
advanced clincial manifestations of GBS
CN: facial diplegia, speech probs and papiledema
deep aching pain on back, buttocks and thighs
FATIGUE
autonomic prob and mech vent if severe talaga
diagnosis for GBS
CSF: high protein but normal cell count
EMG: demyelination and conduction block
discuss CMT
inherited
progressive distal limb wasting and sensory loss
diagnosis of CMT
genetic testing and EMG
clinical manifestations of CMT
onset in childhood c slow preogression
steppage gait d/t weak peroneals and intrinsic foot muscules
- inverted champagne bottle
- pes cavus
- claw hand
sensory loss in feet
