Nucleotides - Coding Molecules Flashcards
What are the two forms Nucleic acids come in?
Nucleic acids come in two forms, DNA and RNA.
What are the monomers of Nucleic Acids?
Nucleotides.
What do Nucleotides contain?
Contains a phosphate group, sugar molecule, and one organic nitrogenous base - joined by covalent bonds.
What differs the various Nucleic acids?
Phosphate group always the same, sugar either deoxyribose/ribose, and 5 bases.
What joins adjacent molecules?
Condensation reaction between phosphate group and sugar of adjacent molecule.
What Nucleotides can bond together?
Only nucleotides carrying the same sugar bind together.
What are the types of Nucleotides and how many rings do they have?
Purines (Adenine/Guanine) have two carbon rings. Pyrimidines (Thymine/Uracil/Cytosine) have one ring.
