Biochemicals and Bonds Flashcards
What is a Monomer?
Monomer is a single, small molecule, joining together to form a polymer.
Why are lipids not polymers?
Lipids are not poymers, although they’re smaller molecules bonded together, as smaller molecules are very different.
What are the monomers and poymers of carbohydrates?
The monomer of Carbohydrates is a Monosaccharide, and the polymer are Polysaccharides.
What are the monomer and polymer of proteins?
The monomer of proteins is an amino acid, and the polymer is polypeptdies and proteins.
What are the monomers and polymers of Nucleic acids?
The monomer of Nucleic acids is Nucleotides, and the polymer is DNA and RNA.
How do you link biological monomers?
A condensation reaction.
What happens in a condensation reaction?
In condensation reactions: a water molecule is released, covalent bond formed, larger molecule formed.
What is Hydrolysis and what happens in it?
Hydrolysis splits larger molecules into monomers - reversse of condensation reaction. In hydrolysis reactions: a water molecule is used, covalent bond broken, smaller molecules formed.
