Enzymes at Work Flashcards
1
Q
What is an acidic pH and what is an alkaline one?
A
Below 7 pH is referred to as acid. Above 7 is alkaline.
2
Q
What can hydrogen ions interfere with?
A
Hydrogen ions can interfere with hydrogen/ionic bonds.
3
Q
What can alter the tertiary structure of an enzyme?
A
- Increasing/Decreasing concentration of hydrogen ions alters tertiary structure – changes in pH also change active site.
4
Q
What does the induced-fit hypothesis depend on?
A
Induced-fit hypothesis relies on charged groups (R-groups) of amino acids.
5
Q
How can the effect of pH be measured?
A
Effect of pH measured using different pH values using buffer solutions.
6
Q
What are special about Pepsin and Trypsin?
A
- Pepsin, in human stomach, has optimum pH of 2 – and Trypsin has an optimum pH of around 7; ideal of the small intestine.
