Inside and out - where enzymes work best Flashcards
1
Q
What do all enzymes need to work?
A
- All enzymes are protein molecules; therefore need to retain specific shape to work.
2
Q
What does regulating body temperature mean?
A
- Endothermic animals maintain their body temperature independently of the environment. Regulating body temperatures means enzymes can work inside the body in any climate.
3
Q
What are heterotrophs?
A
- Animals that obtain nutrients by consuming other organisms are known as heterotrophs.
4
Q
What is digestion?
A
Digestion is breaking down larger molecules into their subunits – requires breaking of glycosidic, peptide and ester bonds.
5
Q
What do Extracellular and Intracellular enzymes do?
A
- Extracellular enzymes catalyse reactions outside the cell; Intracellular enzymes catalyse reactions inside the cell.
