Biochemistry and Metabolism Flashcards
What is a Risk Factor?
A factor which increases your chance of developing a particular disease.
What is Metabolism?
Sum total of biochemical reactions occuring in cells of an organism.
What are the functions of Carbohydrates?
Energy storage and supply, and structure.
What are the functions of proteins?
Structure, transport, enzymes, antibodies, and most hormones.
What are the functions of lipids?
Membranes, energy supply, thermal insulation, protective layer/padding, electrical insulation and hormones.
What are the functions of Vitamins and Minerals?
Form larger molecules involved in metabolic reactions, some act as coenzymes and enzyme activators.
What are nucleic acids functions?
Information molecules, instructions for life.
What are the functions of water?
Support in plants, solvent/medium or metabolic reactions, transport.
What are catabolic reactions?
Catabolic are breaking larger molecules down into smaller ones.
What are Anabolic reactions?
Anabolic reactions are building smaller molecules into larger ones.
