Lipids Are Not Polymers Flashcards
What are solid lipids called and liquid lipids?
5% of organic cell matter. Solid lipid named fats, liquid named oil.
What are the functions of lipids?
Functions of lipids; energy source can be respired to release energy to generate ATP, energy storage in adipose cells, biological membranes, insulation, protection, and some hormones.
What can lipids dissolve in?
Contain C H O (but not many O’s). Insoluble in water. Dissolves in alcohols.
What is the structure of lipids?
Fatty acids have an acid group at one end - same as on an amino acid. Rest of molecule contains a hydrocarbon chain - from 2-20 carbons long - mostly 18.
What happens to a lipid when you introduce a double bond?
Introducing C=C double bonds changes hydrocarbon chain shape - pushes apart and so makes lipids runnier. Lipids with unsaturated fatty acids more likely to be fats.
What do animals and plants typically contain?
Animals typically contain fats, and plants contain oils. Animal lipid lard is solid, and plant lipid olive oil is liquid.
What do triglycerides consist of?
Triglyceride consists of one glycerol molecule to three fatty acids.
How do lipids bond?
A condensation reaction between the acid group of one molecule and one of the OH (hydroxyl) groups of the glycerol molecule forms a covalent bond. Water also produced.
What are the bonds between lipids called?
New bond is an ester bond, and molecule is a monoglyceride - two more condensation reactions forms a triglyceride molecule.
Why can lipids not dissolve in water?
Charges evenly distributed around molecule, so H-H cannot arise, so insoluble in water.
