Notes: Integration & clinical decision making Flashcards
What is one of the most challenging tasks a psychologist will face in assessment
The Synthesis and formulation of data
What is Case Formulation
when the patient and their circumstances are described to provide a contact useful for making treatment recommendations
What are 4 characteristics (benefits) of a case formulation
Offers insight to treatments that might be most effective
Incorporates prognosis
Identifies obstacles to treatment
Outlines intervention options
What is detecting patterns in patients behaviour based on
Theoretical orientations (need good integrative training)
What are “predisposing” factors
symptoms present since a young age
What are “precipitating” factors
changes in symptoms
What are “Perpetuating” factors
what’s keeping the issues going
Who said that “Psychologists own experiences, theoretical orientation, and cognitions greatly effect clinical decision-making”
Tyversky and Kahneman
Research by Gosling compared audio/video taped discussions to see how patients could recall information for assessment, what were the results?
There were low correlations (0.40) between the recall and actual records.
Patients OVER-reported the frequency of their flaws
Schiffman found comparable results to Gosling, how did he do this (what was the experiment?)
he asked patients to record their substance use (like cigarettes) and to also provide a verbal report
What are 3 ways on how “clinical judgements” can be improved ?
1.Use relatively structured interviews
2. Taking careful and detailed notes
3. Decision-making trees
Because of Bias’s and Heuristics, what should we depend on for more accurate information?
Depend on objective information and clear outline diagnostic criteria (like the DSM)
Any lack of ______ should be clearly outlined in written reports
Certainty
What provides a useful check on accuracy of the history
Debriefing the patient and referral source
