Hin/her
Hin denotes Motion away from the speaker
Her denotes motion towards the speaker
They are compounded with position adverbs to form direction adverbs
Eg sie kommt hierher (she’s coming here)
Or leg das Paket hierhin (put the parcel down there)
They can be used with verbs to indicate direction of movement:
Heute ist eine Wahlversammlung und ich gehe hin.
They also combine with prepositions to form directional adverbs
Eg ab (down), auf (up), aus (out), ein (in), über (over), down (unter)
We ging in das Haus hinein.
Sonst vs anders
Anders means ‘else’ or ‘differently’
Der Schirm gehört jemand anders
Ich gehe irgendwo anders hin
Er ist ganz anders als sein Brüder
Sonst means ‘else’ or ‘otherwise’.
Sonst/anders can overlap
Eg kannst du etwas anderes/sonst etwas vorschlagen?
However if the sense is clearly ‘different’ or ‘other’ only ander can be used
Da ist Professor Niebaum und niemand anders (that’s Professor N and no one else I.e. Not a different person)
Da ist Professor Niebaum und sonst niemand (he’s the only one there)
If meaning is ‘in addition’ or ‘apart from that’ then sonst is used:
Wer kommt sonst noch? (Who else is coming?)
