Comparison And Superlative Flashcards
Forming comparator/superlatives with adjectives
To form a comparator, add -er to the end of the adjective.
Eg schöner
To form a superlative, add ‘st’ with adjectival declension
Eg Das schönste
Use the form ‘am -sten’ if there is no noun to be understood or if something is being compared with itself (‘at its most’)
Eg ein Mercedes wäre am teuersten
Comparing two nouns
Comparative particle ('than') is usually als but can also be wie in colloquial speech Eg Peter ist älter als Thomas
Degree of difference is expressed with ‘um als’
Er ist um einen Monat jünger als ich
To express a greater degree (‘even’), noch is used
Er hat gestern noch weniger gearbeitet
Lower degrees of comparison are expressed by ‘weniger’ (less than)
Eg er war weniger optimistisch als sein Bruder
Progression
Progression is expressed by using ‘immer’ (more and more)
Er lief immer schneller
Proportion (the more … the more)’
To express ‘the more x the more y’ use ‘je’ followed by ‘umso/desto’
Je länger man Deutsch lernt, desto/umso leichter wird es
Expressing equality
So … wie (colloquially ‘als’ can be used)
Eg Peter ist so alt wie Thomas
‘Just as’ is expressed using ‘ebenso’ or ‘genauso’
Peter is ebenso/genauso alt wie Thomas
‘Gleich’ can be used to indicate equality
