Define ‘True Pelvis’
The lower, narrower, birth canal part of pelvis. It sits between bladder and rectum.
Define ‘False Pelvis’
The area of the pelvis above the pelvic brim.
What are the dimensions of the pre-pregnant Uterus?
7.5 cm in length, 5 cm in width and 2.5 cm deep. Has a volume between 80-200 mls.

What are the 7 measurements of where to locate the fundus in an abdominal examination?
16 Weeks: 3 finger widths above symphysis
20 Weeks: 3 finger widths below the umbilicus
24 Weeks: at the umbilicus
28 Weeks: 3 finger widths above umbilicus
32 Weeks: Between umbilicus & xyphoid process
36 Weeks: At costal arch
40 Weeks: 1-2 finger widths below costal arch
What are the 3 main functions of the uterus?
Prepare: Nourish developing fetus prior to birth
Assist: Expulsion of baby, placenta and membranes at birth.
Control: Blood loss from placental site after birth
In the first 12 weeks, uterine growth is mainly caused by what?
Enlarging of myometrial cells.
Throughout the remainder of pregnancy, uterine growth is predominantly due to?
Increased vascularity and fluid retention in myometrium.
