What is holistic health?
The acknowledgement that health is complex and depends upon many inter-related components which interact in such a way that the overall effect constitutes health.
What are the 6 dimensions of health?
Physical Health. Mental Health. Emotional Health.
Social Health. Spiritual Health. Sexual Health.
Define Disease
Existence of some abnormality capable of detection (Cancer or Hypertension). Can be diagnosed without any feelings of illness.
Define Physical Health
Concerning the body, e.g. fitness, not being ill.
Define Mental Health
Belief in one’s own worth and positive sense of purpose. The ability to think clearly and coherently.
Define Emotional Health
Ability to feel, recognise and give a voice to feelings such as fear, joy etc. The ability to develop relationships
Define Social Health
Sense of having support from family and friends. Being involved in activities with other people
Define Spiritual Health
Ability to put into practice moral or religious principles or beliefs
Define Sexual Health
Acceptance and ability to achieve a satisfactory expression of one’s sexuality
Define Illness
It is subjective - feelings or symptoms such as aches and pains. Different from disease, but the two are related as disease usually causes illness.
Define Ill-Health
The umbrella term used to describe the experience of disease and illness.
What are the 2 different models of health?
Medical and Social.
What is the Medical Model of Health?
Health is thought of as absence of disease. Defined more by what is not rather than what is. Often a narrow view of health that may be paternalistic.
What is the Social Model of Health?
Examines all factors which contribute to health such as social, cultural, political, environmental and individual lifestyle. Prevention of ill-health is valued and emphasis is on understanding what enables health and well-being.
