Q

What is smooth muscle?

A

Not under voluntary control. They are found in walls of digestive system and blood vessels (peristalsis)

Q

What is skeletal muscle?

A

Under voluntary control, are attached to bones via their tendons and move the skeleton. They are found in trunk

Q

What are osteons?

A

Basic structural units of bone. They are cylindrical weight bearing structures with central canals through which nerves and blood vessels run through.

Q

What are osteocytes?

A

Mature bone cells that monitor and maintain the bone matrix. Give instructions to osteoblasts and osteoclasts for remodelling.

16
Q

What do osteoclasts do?

A

They breakdown old/damaged bone to allow osteoblasts to create new bone in its place.

17
Q

What are the stages of bone remodelling?

A
  1. Osteocytes release chemical signals that direct osteoclasts and osteoblasts.
  2. Osteoclasts dissolve the calcium phosphate of the damaged bone, releasing it back into the blood (known as resorption).
  3. When the old bone has been cleared, osteoclasts begin apoptosis (self destruct).
  4. Osteoclasts then begin rebuilding the bone.
18
Q

What is the role of the musculoskeletal system?

A

Provides protection to organs. Essential in survival response. Stores salts. Involved in production of RBC. Keeps organs working.

19
Q

What hormones mediate bone remodelling?

A

Calcitonin and Parathyroid Hormone

20
Q

List some Musculoskeletal changes during pregnancy

A

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
Displacement of body weight causes back pain and puts increased strain on the pelvic floor.
Diastasis recti - separation of stomach muscles
Leg Cramps and RLS
Separation of pubic bones (SPD)
