Q

What do you set in the MCP altitude window when cleared for the approach for a non-ILS?

A

If DA: Use that
If MDA: Add 50’

UNLESS:

-LOC (GS out) US civil airport: then you can set the MDA and use it as a DA
or
-If you have a ballnote saying you can use MDA as a DA: then you can set MDA and use it as a DA

NOTE: If you are outside the temperature limitation on the Jepp plate, you MUST use MDA +50, regardless of ballnote or otherwise.

Q

What does being in “approach logic” provide?

A

1.) Allows you to stay in VNAV PTH even with the speed window open

2.) Allows you to set the missed approach altitude and still maintain a constant angle down

3.) Allows you to intercept the VNAV PTH while in VNAV ALT mode, and capture the path down.

Q

Why is it so important to be in approach logic prior to a non ILS? And how can you make sure you are in approach logic?

A

Mainly because you want the VNAV to take you down the path. (You want to be able to go from VNAV ALT to VNAV PTH as you intersect the glidepath)

How to know you’re in approach logic? -Look for the VPP. Best way is to go LVSA + check for VPP. If no VPP, you can call for a descend now activation on the VNAV page
