Autoland Flashcards
During autoland, should you use the flight directors or the actual localizer/glideslope indications to monitor the approach?
Raw data, not flight director
Autolands can be made with flaps_____
25 or 30 only
AFDS must display ______ for autoland
LAND 2 or LAND 3
Minimum threshold crossing height for autoland
TCH: 44’
CAT 1 autolands can be flown by _____. But CAT 2 and 3 must be flown by ___.
either pilot. But CAT 2 and 3 is CA only
LAND 3 is considered fail______.
LAND 2 is considered fail______.
LAND 3: Fail operational
LAND 2: Fail passive
Are we allowed to have autothrottles inoperative for autoland?
Yes, but only for CAT 1 and 2.
CAT III requires autothrottles
Where can you find a good review for doing CAT II/III before attempting the approach?
QRH- CAT II/III Approach Review
If the Autoland Status Annunciator (ASA) changes to NO AUTOLAND, what is required?
A missed approach
During autoland, what happens at 25’?
Thrust levers retard and FMA changes to IDLE
During autoland, what happens at 5’?
ROLLOUT is engaged.
If the autopilot does not track centerline, the CA must____
Disconnect the autopilot and manually steer
During an autoland with one engine inoperative, use rudder pedal input until _____.
1,500’ (then the autopiot takes care of the rudder)
If you did go around during an autoland with an engine out, it would take care of rudder until____
another lateral or vertical mode is selected, or altitude capture. (reverts to 1 autopilot and you lose rudder input suddenly and abruptly)
For crosswinds requiring more than 10 degrees of crab angle, runway alignment occurs at____.
500 AGL
For crosswinds requiring a crab angle of between 5 and 10 degrees, runway alignment occurs at____
500 AGL (1st)
200 AGL (2nd)
For crosswinds requiring a crab angle of less than 5 degrees, runway alignment occurs at_____
200 AGL
What does “runway alignment” mean?
simply means a sideslip configuration (wing slightly low into the upwind side)
What is the difference between normal autopilot runway alignment and engine out runway alignment?
Normal: slight bank sideslip
Engine out: Wings level sideslip (occurs at 1,300’ or engine out if lower than 1,300’ when it occurs)
When does the autopilot flare on autoland?
50’
What does fail operational and fail passive mean?
Fail operational: AFDS capable of completing ILS approach, autoland, and rollout if any single system fails after passing alert height (AH)
Fail passive: A single failure causes no significant deviation of airplane flight path or attitude. DA(H) is used
What is a decision height versus a decision altitude?
DH = Radio altitude is controlling (CAT II)
DA = Barometric altitude is controlling (CAT 1)
What is an alert height? (AH)
Used for CAT III. Radio altitude of 100 typically set. Used as a marker for above which certain failures must initiate a missed approach. Has nothing to do with visual reference.
