What is snowballing?
Individual answers question/task for 5 mins
Then forms pair and discuss for 5 mins and then form group and discuss
What is a jigsaw group?
Small groups perform task
Groups reform with one member from old group and discussion continues.
What is a buzz group?
Turn to neighbour and discuss issue/check understanding
What is a group round?
Each member has a brief time to say something on the subject to the group
Stages of small group interactions?
Forming > Norming > Storming > Performing > Adjourning
What is simplified procedural hierarchy?
demonstration by the teacher to the learner
no test
What is Complex procedural hierarchy
Develops over several encounters and some duration of time - perform more and more of procedure under supervision until you can do it independently e.g. TAH
What is schema activation?
Builds on previous understanding/knowledge
What is schema refinement?
Apply basic concepts to solve clinical problems
What is 1-minute preceptor?
Use on ward round teaching
Small group teaching on differentials and support for these, apply learning, reinforce things done well and correct mistakes
What is the delphi technique
Method of congregating expert opinion through a series of iterative questionnaires
Stages are - survey develpment, participant recruitment, data analysis.
What is the caldicott guardian?
Often regulated professionals e.g. doctor, social worker, nurse but not mandatory
Protects confidentiality of people’s health and car information
All NHS organisation and social services need one.
Use caldicott principles
What are the caldicott principles?
- justify purpose
-use confidential info only when necessary
-use minimum necessary confidential info - access to info restricted to need-to-know individuals
-everyone with access should be aware of responsibilities - comply with law
- share info in best interests of pt
- inform patients about how their confidential info is used

Definition of maternal death?
death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of
pregnancy from any cause related to or
aggravated by the pregnancy
divided into:
direct - resulting from obstetric complications
of the pregnancy state
indirect - resulting from previous existing disease
or disease that developed during pregnancy
Examples of direct maternal death?
Ectopic pregnancy, PET, PPH, Suicide, anaesthesia complicatiosn
Examples of indirect maternal death?
Cardiac disease, endocrine, psych, neoplasms, infections, resp conditions, GI conditions
e.g. appendicitis, epilepsy, stroke
Definition of late maternal death?
death of a woman from direct or indirect causes more than 42 days but
less than one year after termination of pregnancy
Examples of late maternal death?
VTE >42 days, cancer, suicide
Examples of coincidental maternal death?
