Nicotinic Acid Drugs, Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitor Therapy, and PCSK9 Inhibitors Flashcards
What do Nicotinic Acid drugs do?
-Lowers Lipids
-Lowers cholesterol
-Increased HDL
Name a Nicotinic Acid drug
Niacin (Vitamin B3)
What do Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors do?
Decreased the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed in the small intestine which reduces serum cholesterol levels, LDL, and triglycerides
Name a Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitor drug
Ezetimibe
What do PCSK9 Inhibitors do?
Prevent proteins from binding to LDL receptors in the liver which lowers LDL levels, triglycerides, and increases HDL levels
Name 2 PCSK9 Inhibitor drugs
-Alirocumab
-Evolocumab
How does Niacin affect blood vessels?
Causes vasodilation
Which release type of Niacin should be taken with food?
Extended-release to maximize bioavailability and minimize GI upset
Describe the mechanism of action of Niacin
-Blocks release of fatty acids from adipose tissue
-This decreases the rate of LDL synthesis
-Also increases the activity of lipoprotein lipase
How long does it take to recognize that triglyceride levels are being lowered due to Niacin? How long does it take to reach maximum effects?
-1-4 days
-3-5 weeks
Can Ezetimibe be taken with or without food?
Doesn’t matter
Ezetimibe can be used alone but it is best used with what kind of drug class?
Statins
How is PCSK9 administered?
SQ
Describe the mechanism of action of PCSK9 drugs
When PCSK9 binds to LDL receptors in liver cells, the cells can’t bind to LDL to get rid of it
PCSK9 Inhibitors block PCSK9 from binding to LDL receptors allowing them to clear circulating LDL
What are contraindications of Niacin?
-Liver disease
-Peptic ulcer disease
-Gout
-Active hemorrhage
-Breastfeeding
