What is the ductus arteriosus?

A

Ductus arteriosus closes within hours of birth.
It allows blood from the right side of the heart to flow to the aorta back out to the body without going through the lungs.

What is persistent fetal circulation?

A

Also called PDA (Patent ductus arteriosus)
Pulmonary hypertension of the newborn.
Newborn’s circulation reverts back to the circulation of a fetus, where much of the blood flow bypasses the lungs.
Common in preemies and usually closes naturally.

What is jaundice?

A

The increase in bilirubin levels due to liver function.
Can be caused by blood incompatibility, prematurity, or idiopathic reasons.
Can lead to kernicterus (brain damage)
