Neurotransmitters Flashcards
CNS:
Acetylcholine
linked to attention and arousal
PNS:
Acetylcholine
used to transmit nerve impulses to muscles
innervates basal ganglia and sweat glands
What are the three catecholamines?
epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine
What does epinephrine do?
secreted by the adrenal medulla to act systemically as a hormone it is used during the sympathetic nervous system’s “fight or flight” response
What does norepinephrine do?
acts at a local level as a neurotransmitter
low levels are seen in depression
high levels are seen in anxiety and mania
What does dopamine do?
plays important role in movement and posture
imbalances may result in schizophrenia
What neurotransmitter is Parkinson’s disease involved in?
dopamine
loss of dopaminergic neurons within the basal ganglia
What does Serotonin do?
plays role in regulating mood, eating, sleeping and dreaming
thought to play role in depression and mania
over supply=mania
under supply=depression
What does GABA do?
produces inhibitory post synaptic potentials and exerts its effects by causing hyperpolarization of post-synaptic membrane
What does glycine do?
serves as a inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system by increasing chloride influx into the neuron
What does glutamate do?
excititory neurotransmitter in CNS
What do neuropeptides do?
neuropeptides-such as endorphins can act as natural painkillers
