Neurons and Action Potential - Topic 1 Flashcards
What does a photoreceptor detect and their location?
It controls the detection of light
It is located in the retina in the eye
What do thermoreceptors detect and their location?
It controls the detection of temperature
It is located in the skin
What do proprioceptors detect and their location?
It controls the detection changes in tensions
It is located in joints
What are chemoreceptors and their location?
It controls the detection in the chemical environment
For example, taste and smell
Located in brainstem, cerebellum, hypothalamus and midbrain
What do nocireceptors detect and their location?
It controls the detection of direct pain
It is located in the skin and stomach
What do mechanoreceptors detect and their location?
They perceive mechanical stimuli
For example, touch
Located in joint capsular tissues, ligaments, tendons, muscles and skin
What is the nervous system?
The nervous system transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body, including internal organs
What is apart of the central nervous system?
The brain and spinal cord
What is a part of the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system consists of the nerves that branch out from the brain and spinal cord, sensory and motor neurons
What is the somatic nervous system?
It is a component of the peripheral nervous system associated with the voluntary control of the body movements via the use of skeletal muscles
What are afferent neurons?
Afferent neurons, also called sensory neurons, are the nerve fibers responsible for bringing sensory information from the outside world into the brain
What are efferent neurons?
Efferent neurons, also called motor neurons, are the nerve fibers responsible for carrying signals from the brain to the peripheral nervous system in order to initiate an action
What is the role of the nervous system?
The nervous system works closely within the endocrine system to respond to environmental changes and maintain homeostasis
