Neuromuscular Selective terminology Flashcards
Agnosia
Inability to recognize familiar objects with one form of sensation (visual agnosia)
Akinesia
Inability to initiate movement
Expressive Aphasia
(Broca’s) severe difficulty in verbal expression
-Right hemiplegia
Receptive Aphasia
(Wernicke’s) Severe disturbance in auditory comprehension. Reading, writing, and word recognition are also impaired
Apraxia
Inability to perform movements previously learned even though there is no loss of coordination, strength, sensation, or comprehension
- Ideomotor-
- Ideational -No longer gets the idea of how to do a routine task
Astereognosis
Inability to recognize objects by touch alone
Ataxia
Uncoordinated movement, especially gait
Athetosis
Slow, involuntary, worm-like, twisting motions
Causalgia
Burning sensations, which are painful. Often associated with CRPS type 1
Cheyne-Stokes Respiration
Breathing pattern characterized by a period of apnea lasting 10-60 seconds
Chorea
Rapid, involuntary, jerky movements (Huntington’s)
Delirium
Temporary confusion and loss of mental function
Dementia
Loss of memory or intellectual function
Horner’s Syndrome
ptosis of the eyelid, constriction of the pupil, and lack of sweating of the ipsilateral face, often accompanying stroke involving the anterior inferior or posterior inferior cerebellar arteries.
Reciprocal Inhibition
Inhibition of muscles antagonistic to those being facilitated. This is essential for coordinated movement.
Somatagnoisa
A lack of awareness of the relationship of one’s own body parts or body parts of others
Hemiballismus
Sudden, jerky, forceful, and flailing involuntary movements on one side of the body
Intention Tremor
Involuntary oscillatory movements that occur during voluntary movement.
Anosognosia
Is detail, neglect, or lack of awareness of the presence or severity of one’s paralysis
Prosopagnosia
Inability to recognize faces (face blindness)
