Common Gate Deviations (gaaah make it stop)!! Flashcards
Lateral Trunk Bend
Weak glute med
Will bend toward same side was weakness
aka Trendelenburg Gait
Can be seen with pain in the hip
Backward Trunk Lean
The result of weak glute max
Will also have difficulty going up stairs or ramps
Forward Trunk lean
Weak quads (decreased flexor movement at knee) Hip and knee flexion contractors
Excessive hip flexion
Weak hip extensors or tight hip and or knee flexors
Limited hip extension
Tight or spastic hip flexors
Limited hip flexion
Weak hip flexors, tight extensors
Excessive knee flexion
Weak quads or flexor contracture
Can see a forward trunk with this
Hyperextension
Weak quads
Plantar flexion contracture or extensor spasticity
Toe first gait
Weak dorsiflexors Spastic PF Shortened leg Painful heel Positive support reflex
Foot Slap
Weak dorsiflexors or hypotonia
Compensated with steppage gait
Foot flat gait
Weak DF
Decreased ROM into DF
Excessive DF with uncontrolled tibia (calcaneus gait)
Weak PF
Equines gait (excessive PF)
Spastic or contracture of PFs
Supination (varus position of calcaneus)
Spastic inverters, weak everters, pes vors, genau varum
Pronation
Weak inverters, spasticity, pes valgus, genu valgum
Inadequate push-off
Result of weak PF, decreased ROM, or pain in forefoot
Insufficient forward pelvic rotation during swing
Stiff pelvis
Weak abs
Weak flexor muscles
Insufficient hip and knee flexion during swing
Weak hip and knee flexors
Circumduction during swing
Weak hip and knee flexors
Hip hiking during swing
Weak hip and knee flexors or extensor spasticity
Results in quadratus lumborum activation
Excessive hip and knee flexion (steppage Gait) during swing
Shorten leg length
Weak DF’s
Insufficient knee flexion during swing
Extensor spasticity
Decreased ROM or weak hamstrings
Excessive knee flexion during swing
Flexor spasticity, flexor withdrawal reflex
Foot drop during swing (equinus)
Weak or delayed DF or spastic PF
