What causes thiamine deficiency in carnivores?
- Overcooking meat
- Sulfur dioxide treatment in foods
- High proportion of fish in feed (thiaminases)
What is the major function of thiamine?
energy metabolism
What happens in carnivores with Thiamine deficiency?
Deficiency ⇢ Increased vascular permeability ⇢ Symmetrical hemorrhage and necrosis of gray nuclei of inter- and midbrain (brainstem)
What happens to lambs with Enterotoxemia Type D in lambs?
Clostridium perfringens type D ⇢ Epsilon toxin ⇢ vascular damage ⇢ hemorrhage, necrosis in gray matter nuclei (arrows) of the basal nuclei or basal ganglia
What neurological damage does Yellow Star thistle cause ?
- Nigropallidal encephalomalacia
- Billateral necrosis of the substantia nigra and globus pallidus
How does Thiamine deficiency affect ruminants?
- Laminar cortical necrosis (yellow discoloration)
- lead poisoning can cause similar lesions
How would ruminants become thiamine deficient?
- High concentrate rations
- Bacteria high in thiaminases
- Ingestion of thiaminea- containing plains
- High sulfur diets
