Networks - Topologies 1.3 Flashcards
topology
-way which parts of a system are connected
star topology - pros
-fast data transfer as wires aren’t shared
-high performing = no data collisions
-reliable = if 1 cable stops working - others aren’t affected
star topolgy
In a star network each device on the network has its own cable that connects to a switch
star topology cons
-expensive = lots of hardware cables
-if switch fails = network can’t work
Bus topology
all the workstations, servers and printers are joined to one cable
what are at the end of all bus topologies
a terminator is fitted to stop signals reflecting back down the bus.
Bus topology pros
-easy to install
-cheap to install = little cable required
bus topology cons
-if the main cable fails the whole network will fail
- slower as more devices are connected because of data collisions
- every workstation on the network “sees” all of the data on the network – this is a security risk
