Q

What is a SoHo LAN?

A

SOHO LANs. One of the most common local-area deployments is the Small-Office / Home-Office LAN (SOHO). It is a small computer network usually built of one Ethernet switch, one router, and one wireless access point.

Q

What is an SDN?

A

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an approach to networking that uses software-based controllers or application programming interfaces (APIs) to communicate with underlying hardware infrastructure and direct traffic on a network.

Q

What is a NIC?

A

A NIC provides a computer with a dedicated, full-time connection to a network. It implements the physical layer circuitry necessary for communicating with a data link layer standard, such as Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Q

What does a Hub do, and what cable is used to connect to it?

A

A hub (also called a network hub) serves as the point of connection for all devices on a local area network (LAN). RJ-45’s are used to connect to its ports.

Q

What is a Switch and its advantages?

A

Switches keep traffic between two devices from getting in the way of your other devices on the same network. Switches allow you to control who has access to various parts of the network. Switches allow you to monitor usage. Switches allow communication (within your network) that’s even faster than the Internet. So no collisions and it remembers ports used by clients and is more secure as a result.

Q

What is UTM?

A

Unified threat management (UTM) refers to when multiple security features or services are combined into a single device within your network. Like a firewall and malware defence in one.

Q

What is a managed switch?

A

Managed switches let users adjust each port on the switch to any setting, enabling them to manage, configure and monitor the network in many ways. They also provide greater control over how data travels over the network and who can access that data.

Q

What is a patch panel?

A

A patch panel provides a way to keep large numbers of cables organized, enabling flexible connectivity into network hardware located in a data centre or an access or wiring closet. The most common type of patch panel is used within an organization’s LAN.
