nervous tissue Flashcards
nervous tissue comprised of
neurons
neuroglia
which is bigger, neurons or neuroglia
neurons
neuroglia general function
support, nourish, protect neurons
neuron function
create electrical signals - communication through body
satellite cells function
-structural support
-regulate exchange of materials between neuronal cell bodies and interstitial fluid
schwann cells function
-form myelin sheath around axons in the PNS
-encloses one axon
microglia function
-phagocytize cellular debris, microbes, damaged nervous tissue
-immune response
ependymal cells function
-produce, assist, + monitor circulation of CSF in CNS
-form the blood-CSF barrier
astrocyte function
1 - support neurons
2- contribute to blood brain barrier
3- maintain chemical homeostasis of extracellular fluid
types of astrocytes
protoplasmic (short branches)
fibrous (long branches)
oligodendrocyte function
forms + maintains myelin sheath around CNS axons
-produces myelin for multiple axons
unipolar neurons in CNS
sensory neurons
bipolar neurons in CNS
special senses (vision, hearing, smell)
multipolar neurons in CNS
-all motor neurons
-most neurons in brain + spinal cord
