Nervous System 3 Flashcards
What is a synapse
The junction where one neuron can chemically signal to another neuron
What is meant by presynaptic neurons and postsynaptic neurons
The neuron sending the chemical signal is referred to as the presynaptic neuron and the neuron receiving the chemical signal is referred to as the postsynaptic neuron.
What are the 8 steps for action potential
-action potential arrives at axon terminal
-voltage gated ca2+ channels open
-ca2+ enters the presynaptic neuron
-ca2+signals to neurotransmitter vesicles
-vesicles move to the membrane and dock
-neurotransmitters released via exocytosis
-neurotransmitters bind to receptors
-signal initiated in postsynaptic cell
What is the difference between excite or inhibit
If a neuron is excited it is more likely o produce an action potential, if it is inhibited it is less likely to produce an action potential, if an action potential is not produced the signal essentially stops at this point
