Musclual Skeletal System 1 Flashcards
What are the 5 different types bones
-flat bone
-long bone
-short bone
-irregular bone
-Sesamoid bone
What are fibrous joints
Where the bones are bound by a tough, fibrous tissue, typically joints that require strength and stability with little movement
What are cartilaginous joints
The bones are united by fibrocartilage or hyaline cartilage
What is a synovial joint
Defined by a fluid-filled joint cavity contained in a fibrous capsule
What are the 6 different types of joints
-pivot joint
-saddle joint
-plane joint
-hinge joint
-ball and socket joint
-condyloid joint
What is the general function of the skeleton
Provides support, protection, attachment for muscles/ligaments, is a source of blood production and stores minerals
What is the general function of the muscles
Facilitates movement, provides support and works in antagonistic pairs
What are the 3 main muscles of the muscular system
Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle cardiac muscle
Out of the three types of muscle which are controlled by the autonomic nervous system and which are under voluntary control
Skeletal - voluntary control
Smooth and cardiac - autonomic nervous system
What do type 1 muscle fibres allow you to do
Are slow oxidative allowing you to run long distances because they are slow to fatigue
What do type 2a muscle fibres allow you to do
Fast oxidative but because they switch to anaerobic respiration they can fatigue more quickly
What do type 2b muscle fibres allow you to do
Fast glycolytic allow for short sprints as they fatigue the quickest
