Molecules- Proteins Flashcards
What bond does merging amino acids create
A peptide bond
What is the primary structure of proteins
The primary structure is Proteins that form together into polypeptides through a series of condensation reactions
What does the primary structure determine
It’s three dimensional shape and therefore its function
What is the primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure of protein made up of
Primary- amino acid
Secondary- alpha helix/ beta sheet
Tertiary- peptide
Quaternary- protein
Why is collagen important in the body
An important component of the connective tissues in skin, tendons, bones, and many other body tissues
Describe the shape of a Collegen molecule
A triple helix, in which three long polypeptide chains are coiled around each other
What is meant by globular proteins
Enzymes and hormones are more or less spherical, or globe shaped such ass haemoglobin
What is transcription
A copy is made of the genetic code of the dna inside the nucleus
What is translation
The code is translated from dna instructions into an amino acid sequence by the ribosome
What are 3 examples of functions of proteins in the body
Cell adhesion, blood clotting, transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide via haemoglobin
