Integumentary System Flashcards
What are the 4 components of the integumentary system
-skin
-hair
-nails
-exocrine glands
What are 4 functions of relevant components of the integumentary system
-vitamin d synthesis
-protection
-cutaneous sensation
-excretion
Describe the epidermis layer of skin
No blood vessels or nerves
Protective barrier
Full replacement takes around a month
Carry’s bacteria and fungi
Describe what the dermis layer of skin contains
Arterioles and capillaries
Lymph vessels
Sensory nerve endings
Sweat glands and their ducts
Hairs
Describe the eccrine sweat gland
Majority all over body, clear watery fluid, pores on the surface lead to bodies in the subcutaneous layer
Describe the apocrine sweat glands
Armpits and groin area via hair follicles, more viscous fluid and odour, active from puberty, specialised type to create ear wax
How does the skin provide protection
Physical barrier against water loss and infection. Contains melanocytes that produce melanin which protects against harmful uv rays
How does the skin aid the formation of vitamin d
Lipid based substance is converted into vitamin d by sunlight which is used to make calcium and phosphate for bone maintenance
4 impacts of aging on the skin
Dermis and epidermis thins and elasticity reduce
Thermoregulation becomes less efficient
Dry skin
Weaker bones
