Molecules- Lipids Flashcards
3 facts about lipids
-they are insoluble in water
-they contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
-the 2 main types for us are triglycerides and phospholipids
What is the role of phospholipids in the body
Found in cell membranes and membranes around organelles, they provide flexibility and transfer of lipid soluble substances across the membrane
How do lipids create energy in the body
Lipids contain more energy for the same mass as carbohydrate and release water when oxidised. Stored in adipocytes
How do lipids create insulation in the body
Slow conductors of heat so storage u dear the skin helps retain body heat and provide electrical insulation as myelin
How do lipids create protection in the body
Fat is stored around the body top provide additional protection
What is an ester bond
A bond in a triglyceride where each fatty acid bonds with glycerol a condensation reaction and three molecules of water
Describe the structure of a triglyceride
Have a low mass to energy ratio so many can be stored in a small volume
What are phospholipids made of
One molecule of glycerol, two fatty acid chains and one phosphate molecule
State two functions of lipids in the body and give an example
Protection and insulation fat protects the organs in the body such as the ones that aren’t protected by cartilage or bone, fat also helps retain body heat
What is the key different between a phospholipid and a triglyceride in terms of structure
Phospholipids are a sphere with a hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tails. Triglycerides are E shaped with 3 fatty acid chains and one glycerol molecule
