Genetics Flashcards
What is the difference between proteins and dna
DNA is a sequence of nuclear bases that join through condensation reactions and form a polymer, proteins are a sequence of amino acids that join through condensation reactions and form a polymer
What 3 basic components is a nucleotide made of
-a pentose sugar made of 5 carbon atoms
-a phosphate group
-a nitrogen containing organic base
What is a mono-nucleotide
A single nucleotide containing the 3 components
What is a dinucleotide
Two nucleotides joined by the sugar and phosphate group to forming phosphodiester bond
What is a polynucleotide
The linking of mono and dinucleotides to form a long chain single strand molecule
What are the two types of RNA
mRNA- messenger RNA
tRNA- transfer RNA
What what are the specific base pairs in dna
-Adenine always links to thymine (a-t)
-guanine always links to cytosine (g-c)
What are the 3 key points to remember about rna and dna
-the purpose for dna and rna as the carrying molecules of genetic information
-dna holds genetic information
-rna transfers genetic information from dna to the ribosomes where proteins are synthesised
