nervous system Flashcards
CNS
brain, spinal cord
PNS
nerves
neuron
dendrites, cell body and axon. transport info in the form of electrical signals
sensory neurons
get info from a sensory receptor in the body to the CNS - detect changes in environment
motor neurons
transmits commands away from the CNS to the muscles and glands
interneuron
located within CNS, connect motor and sensory neurons. combine incoming info with outgoing messages
action potential
rapid change in polarity across the membrane of the neuron. requires 2 types of gated channel proteins : depolarisation and repolarisation
depolarisation
sodium gates open Na flows into cell, membrane potential changes from -65mV to
+40mV
repolarisation
potassium gates open K flows to outside axon. membrane potential changes from +40nV to -65mV
neurotransmitters
chemical messenger which transmits signals across a chemical synapse from one neuron to another
somatic nervous system (func division)(voluntary)
responsible for co-ordinating the bodys movements and for receiving external stimuli - regulates activities under conscious control
autonomic nervous system (involuntary)
sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric
sympathetic ns
responds to impending danger
parasympathetic ns
when a person is resting. main function to activate “rest and digest” response and return the body to homeostasis after fight or flight response
enteric ns
manages many aspects of digestion
