musculoskeletal system Flashcards
axial skeletal
skull, the vertebral column(spine), the thoracic (rib cage)
appendicular skeletal
pectoral gridle (shoulders), upper and lower limbs(arms and legs), pelvic gridle(hip bones)
muscles
generate motion, force. 3 types of muscle tissue occur skeletal, cardiac and smooth
cardiac muscle
only in heart and responsible for moving blood through the circulatory system by allowing the heart to contract rhythmically
smooth muscle
primary muscle of internal organs, tubes and influences the movement of material in, out and within the body
skeletal muscle
only contract in response to a signal from a somatic motor neuron (over 600 in body)
compact bone
hard outer layer of bones, minimal gaps and spaces. contains haversian canals
spongy bones
fills the interior of bones, an open cell porous network
osteocytes
contain nucleas and cytoplasm. most common in mature bones play important role in all aspects of bone function
osteoblasts
responsible for bone formation, constantly being reshaped by these cells
osteoclasts
instrumental in controlling the amount of bone tissue. removes bone tissue by demineralizing the matrix
tendons
connects muscle to bone. tough, flexible fibrous connective tissue
joints
structures that connect individual bones and may allow bones to move against each other to cause movement. most common movable joint is synovial
ligament
connect ends of bones together in order to form a joint. small band of white, fibrous elastic tissue.
