biostatistics Flashcards
variable
is something whose value can vary
qualitative (categorical) variable
a variable that cannot be measured in quantitative form but can only be identified as names or categories e.g type of drug
quantitative variable (numerical)
can be measured numerically with 2 types - discrete and continuous. discrete :- whole numbers e.g episodes, continuous:- continue scale e.g weight
nominal
values are names that cannot be ordered e.g eye color, occupation
ordinal
values are attributes that are naturally ordered e.g level of pain
frequency table
lists a set of values and how often they occur
cumalative frequency
is the running total of frequencies in a table
mean
calculated by summing all observations and dividing by the number of observations
statistic
characteristic or measure obtained by using the date values from a sample
parameter
characteristic or measure obtained by using all the data values from a specific population
the median
halfway point in a data set, must be arranged in order. when there is no single middle value then it is midway between the 2
the mode
value that occurs most often in the data set
measures of dispersion
measures of spread are used to tell us how spread out the values are
the range
highest value minus the lowest
standard deviation
is the square root of the variance
