immune system Flashcards
components
organs - thymus, spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes
non-specific (innate) immunity
acts rapidly no memory. 1)first line of defence - structures= skin, nasal hair. 2)chemicals - sweat tears 3)commensal flora
specific defence - adaptive immunity
generate appropriate response , has memory
complement (innate)
group of blood serum proteins that help defend the body as they enhance ability of antibodies
phagocytosis
process of ingesting particles by a cell to form a phagosome which fuses with lysosome to become a phagolysosome
interferons
group of signalling proteins produced by virus infected cells
defensins
natural antimicrobial agents
dendritic cells
process antigen material and present it on the cell surface to the T cells. acts as mesenger between innate and adaptive
natural killer cell
a type of lymphocyte with no immunological memory. activity against cancer cells
antibody
proteins produced by B-lymphocytes form antigen/antibody that triggers long term immunity. 5 types = IgA, IgE, IgD, IgE, IgM
B cell lymphocytes
produce antibody
T cells
T helper, T suppressor also respond to antigen but not produce antibody
