Nervous system Flashcards
3 Primary Functions of the Nervous System
- Reception of sensory input from the internal and external environment
- Transmission of motor outputs that govern muscular and glandular activity
- Integration and exchange of information so that the activities of various structures and parts of body are regulated in a coordinated manner.
2 Anatomic Systems of the Nervous System
Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System
Central Nervous System Function and Major Structures
Function: All sensory information is flowing towards and where all motor information is transmitted out from.
Structures: Brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System Function and Major Structures
Function: To conduct sensory information to the CNS and motor information away to rest of body.
Structures: 12 pair of cranial nerves and 31 pair of spinal nerves
2 Primary Function Divisions of Nervous System
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
Autonomic Nervous System Function and Divisions
Function: In charge of involuntary life processes, like heart beat, respiration, endocrine activity, etc.
Divisions: Sympathetic System and Parasympathetic System
Somatic Nervous System Function and Components
Function: Involved in the production of observable events and the environmental changes.
Components: Motor and Sensory Components
Sympathetic Nervous System Function
Mobilizes the body for threatening situations, like heart racing, sweating, dilating the eyes, etc.
Parasympathetic Nervous System Function
Acts to conserve body’s resources so you can meet the challenges created by the sympathetic response, like slowing heart rate, etc.
Motor Component Functions and Divisions
Function: Concerned with execution of bodily functions under voluntary control.
Divisions: Pyramidal and Extrapyramidal Systems
Sensory Component Functions
- Feedback from skeletal muscles
- Responsible for environmental perception
- Concerned with other non visceral (not organ) components
Pyramidal Functional Division Function
Responsible for initiation of voluntary motor acts, like starting to take a step.
Extrapyramidal Function Division Functions
Responsible for background tone and movement supporting the primary motor act (refines the movement).
