Diencephalon Flashcards
Ganglia
Masses of gray matter in white matter
What makes up the Basal Ganglia?
Caudate Nucleus, Lentiform Nucleus (Which is composed of Putamen and Globus pallidus), Claustrum, and amygdaloid body.
Corpus Striatum
Composed of Putamen, globus pallidus, and internal capsule. Landmark in basal ganglia
What makes up the lentiform nucleus?
Putamen and Globus Pallidus
Basal Ganglia Main Role
Helps refine movement
Basal Ganglia Four Main Functions
- It regulates muscle tone that supports the primary movement
- it controls postural adjustments during skilled movements
- it adjusts movement to the environment
- it allows us to learn new movements
Two Primary Structures of Diencephalon
Thalamus and Hypothalamus
What Composes the Thalamus?
Made up of 26 nuclei, Composed of two egg shaped nuclei (masses of gray matter)
Meaning of Reticular Activating System
It alerts the brain to incoming stimuli, like an early warning system
Meaning of Final Common Relay
All incoming sensory information has to go through the thalamus
Hypothalamus
Control center for autonomic nervous system and an important crossroads for the limbic system, provides organization for limbic system
Limbic System
Governs our emotions and behaviors as well as influences autonomic and endocrine activity
Hypothalamus Function In the Limbic System
Regulates the body functions, like body temperature, wakefulness, and regulates desire (for food and water)
