Definition of Anatomy
the study of the structures of an organism and the relationship of its parts
Definition of Physiology
the study of the function or vital processes of a living organism
3 Reasons Why SLPs Need to Know Anatomy and Physiology
- the typical communication process is so complex that you cannot understand it without knowing the anatomy and physiology
- in order to provide services to those with atypical communication
- it facilitates communication among professionals
What is peripheral?
the outward part of a surface or organ
What is ventral and dorsal?
Ventral- away from the backbone, toward front of body
Dorsal- toward the backbone, away from the body
What is Anterior and Posterior?
Anterior- toward the body, away from back
Posterior- Toward the back, away from front
What is Superficial and Deep?
Superficial- toward the surface
Deep- away from surface
What is External and Internal?
External- toward the outer surface
Internal- toward the inner surface
What is Superior and Inferior?
Superior- upper or above
Inferior- lower or below
What is Cranial and Caudal?
Cranial- toward the head, aka rostral
Caudal- toward the tail
What is Medial and Lateral?
Medial- toward the midline or axis of body or structure
Lateral- away from midline or axis of body or structure
What is Proximal and Distal?
Proximal- toward the body or point of attachment
Distal- away from the body or point of attachment
What is Sagittal/Median Plane?
The vertical plane or cut which divides into left and right halves or sections
What is Frontal/Coronal Plane?
The cut or plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior sections
What is Transverse Plane?
Horizontal cut or plane that divides body into upper and lower portions
