Myelencephalon Flashcards
Ventral Median Fissure
Splits the medulla oblongata down the middle
Pyramids
On each side of the ventral median fissure. A rounded prominence
Pyramidal Tract
Major descending pathway that starts at the level of the cortex and extends all the way down to the ventral horns of the spinal cord
Pyramidal Decussation
Point where 80% of motor nerve fibers cross to opposite side of the body
Lateral Corticospinal Tracts
The 80% of the motor nerve fibers that cross are renamed this
Anterior Corticospinal Tracts
The 20% of the motor nerve fibers that don’t cross are renamed this
2 Major Dorsal Sensory Tracts of the Medulla Oblongata
Fasciculus gracilis and Fasciculus cuneatus
3 Medulla Oblongata Reflex Centers and Functions
- Cardiac Reflex Center- Regulates rate and strength of the heart beat
- Vasomotor Reflex Center- Regulates and changes diameters of blood vessels
- Respiratory Reflex Center- Regulates the rate and rhythm of breathing
