Nervous System Flashcards
Divisions of the nervous system
Central nervous system
peripheral nervous system
autonomic nervous system
Decribe the CNS
consists of: brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, spinal nerves
- receives sensory information and makes sense of it
- controls voluntary and involuntary functions incuding all motor movement
Describe the PNS
consists of: sensory and motor nerves
communication network from the CNS to the rest of the body, sends sensory info from environment to cns to produce motor movements
Describe autonomic nervous system
- controls involunatry function of muscles, organs and tissues
- Sympathetic system: fight or flight response release of adrenalin and affects heart rate
- parasympathetic system: controls important functions when body is at rest
Define nervous tissue
sends messages to and from CNS and controls body functions
Cranial nerve V (5)
Trigeminal Nerve: main sensory nerve of the face
Cranial Nerve VII (7)
Facial Nerve: main motor nerve of the face
Cranial nerve XI (11)
Accessory Nerve: Motor control of the neck and shoulders
Define Sensory Nerves
detect sensory stimuli through sensory receptors from environment and relay the info to the brain
Define motor nerves
send messages from the brain to muscles and glands to produce movements (voluntary or involuntary)
what cells make up nerve tissue?
neurons
3 branches of the trigeminal nerve?
Opthalmic
Maxillar
Mandible
