Bacteriology Flashcards
Pathogen
A microorganism that is capable of entering body and cause disease or infection
Pathogenic Disease
A disease caused by organisms such as bacteria, virus, fungi, parasites
WHat conditions do bacteria need to survive?
warm
dark
damp
dirty
Define bacteria
Microscopic single celled organisms that can exist anywhere and in extreme conditions
Can grow and reproduce in ideal conditions
2 types of bacteria
Pathogenic (harmful)
Non-pathogenic (not harmful, often beneficial)
eg lactobacilli
Types of Pathogenic Bacteria (3)
Coccus (round shape)
Bacilli (rod shape)
Spirilla (spiral shape)
Most common type of pathogenic bacteria?
Bacilli
name 2 pus forming bacteria
streptococci
staphylococci
Define spore
inactive bacteria that cannot cause infection, become spores when conditions are not ideal
What level of decontamination do you need to kill spores?
Sterilization
Name the sturctures that make bacteria motile
Cilia (hair like projections)
Flagella (tail like projections)
name 4 ways bacteria may enter body
Mouth (food/water)
Nose (airborne droplets)
sex
broken skin
WHat is the golden rule?
Never treat a client in an area where there is inflammation
What is inflammation?
Characterized by Heat pain erythema edema
Define Immunity
Your body’s ability to destroy pathogens that enter body
Define Bloodbourne pathogen
pathogens that are spread by blood/body fluids
Define Parasites
organisms that live on or inside other organisms and contribute nothing beneficial to that organism
Fungi example
ringworm
Parasite examples (2)
Scabies, lice
Define local infection and give 2 examples
An infection that is confined to a small area (examples: pimple, abscess)
Define general Infection
An infection that has entered the bloodstream
Define Pus
A fluid created by infection that contained dead cells, bacteria and waste matter
2 types of immunity
Natural immunity & aquired immunity
Define natural immunity
your body’s immunity that is partly genetic and partly aquired through hygeinic living habits
Define aquired imminity
Immunity that developed after overcoming a disease, through vaccination or though expsosure to allergens
What are your bodys 3 lines of defense?
1) skin and body secretions 2) White blood cells 3) antitoxins
name the types of organisms that cause disease (4)
bacteria
virus
parasites
fungi
define anerobic
organisms thats cant survive in environments with oxygen
